10 points of netiquette

4.1 Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life- be ethical in your engagement and know that breaking the law is bad netiquette( Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 84)

4.2 Know where you are in the cyberspace- the netiquette required will differ from domain to domain. If you are in forum o experts, your netiquette should reflect respect. Whereas if you are in a chat room with a group of friends then netiquette will differ.( Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 84)

4.3 Respect other peoples time and bandwidth- when sharing files or documents, bear in mind the audiences bandwidth, furthermore make sure you read FAQs first before asking mundane questions where the answers already exist.( Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 84)

4.4 Make yourself look good online- check grammar and spelling before you post. Most people judge others intelligence based on the use of grammar and spelling. Only post on things you know about, it is not worth it to look like the fool.( Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 84)

4.5 Share expert knowledge- offer answers and help others where you can.(Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 84)

4.7 Respect other people privacy-don’t give out other peoples details , online or offline.( Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 85)

4.8 Don’t abuse your power- don’t give out other peoples details, online or offline.( Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 85)

4.9 Be forgiving of other peoples mistake we were all once beginners and should accept that everyone has to start somewhere.( Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 85)

4.10 Remember the Human-never forget that the person reading your communication is actually a person with feelings and can get hurt.( Digital Citizenship Module,2015, 85)

2.Penalties that apply for failing to meet these rules:

  • If these rules are not followed the first step would be to send the user an automatic email stating that they are breaking these rules

  • The next step would be to limit their time access to the internet.

  • If the rules are still continued to be disobeyed they would then need to attend a disciplinary hearing

  • If the previous step has not corrected their actions then the final step would be to take legal action against the user

3.How you can manage netiquette in your business

  • Prior to requesting or accepting connections from colleagues, think about the material all sides are apt to share- is it appropriate for consumption

  • Before connecting with your boss on social networks, consider if you’ would still want to be connected if you ever leave the position

  • When posting status updates, photos or videos, or interacting online, let professionalism rule: if its unsafe to say or share at the office, avoid saying or sharing it online

  • Do not tag co-workers without their permission, and do not tag them in images and videos that may be perceived as unprofessional, inappropriate or controversial

  • Do not post negative, controversial, rude or potentially insulting commentary in online spaces

  • Don’t speak ill of other or publicly deride competitors-good sportsmanship reigns

  • Be careful which posts you like or re-tweet- such as actions may be perceived as a sign of your absolute support for these pots, regardless of content contained within them.
